State Cinema 6 has approached the Tasman District Council to buy 740sq m of its Papps carpark which fronts on to Cambridge St. It has plans to build a two-storey, two-cinema complex with parking underneath.

The council has suggested that proceeds from the sale could be used to develop adjacent council-owned land into carparking to offset the loss of about 30 parking spaces.

But local businesses and ratepayers at Tuesday's hearing into the proposal voiced their fears over the loss of carparking and the complex attracting more cars, exacerbating the parking problems.
