Prominent Timaru moteliers Robin and Maree Winter want to develop land in Evans Street, but if the council decides against chopping the trees down, the Winters will pull the pin on the project.

The project would involve demolishing houses at 6, 8 and 8a Evans Street, and building either an apartment or motel complex.

The couple asked for the two gum trees, which are near the barbecue and children's playground area at the Bay, to be given the chop at a council meeting on Tuesday.
