Shopping areas on Coronation and Govett avenues and at Blagdon will be upgraded over the next few months.

Work will start first at the Frankleigh Park shopping area, on Govett Ave, with the upgrade there due to begin next week.

The $250,000 project will see the three shopping areas get new hotmix footpaths inset with pavers, seats, rubbish bins and small landscape planting.

At the Coronation Ave site the kerb will be extended at the intersection with Oriental St, to make it easier for pedestrians to see traffic.

New Plymouth District Council manager roading assets Max Aves said the work was a continuation of the council's streetscape work.

"We've previously completed new streetscapes in Waitara, Inglewood, Bell Block, Fitzroy, Moturoa and Westown and we're about to complete the streetscape in Oakura. So now we're able to work on the smaller suburban shopping areas in New Plymouth," Mr Aves said.

The work in the other areas had provided distinct identities and freshened up the locations, he said.
