“The trend for new dwellings has doubled since the low point in March 2011, but is still 27% below the series peak in January 2004,” business indicators manager Neil Kelly said.

In April 2014, 2082 new dwellings were consented, including 432 apartments. This is the third time in six months that the number of new apartments has been above 400.

The large number of apartments caused the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented to rise 1.5%.

Excluding apartments, the seasonally adjusted number fell 5.2%.

The regions that consented the most new dwellings in April were:
Auckland – 697 (including 241 apartments)
Canterbury – 554 (including 40 apartments)
Waikato – 261 (including 69 apartments).

A total of $1.1 billion of building work was consented in April, with $739 million of residential work and $401 million of non-residential work.

Data for building consents is obtained from all territorial authorities in New Zealand.
