Mercer NZ commits to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

Consistent with its goal to place sustainability at the centre of its investment approach, Mercer New Zealand has committed to a target of net-zero absolute carbon emissions by 2050 for its investment funds.

This represents a total of NZ$10 billion in assets under management as at May 31, 2021. To achieve this, Mercer expects to reduce portfolio carbon emissions by 45 per cent from 2020 baseline levels by 2030.

The announcement follows similar commitments made for the Mercer Funds in Australia, and Mercer’s discretionary portfolios in UK, Europe and Asia.

The commitment aligns with targeting a 1.5C limit on global temperature increases and the Paris Agreement’s ambitions and is also consistent with New Zealand’s Climate Change Response (Zero-Carbon) Amendment Act 2019.
