Vaccination status no issue for Southern Cross Healthcare

Southern Cross Healthcare strongly believes that all New Zealanders are entitled to access healthcare services when they need them and will not use a patient’s unvaccinated status as a reason to deny access to its healthcare facilities.

Southern Cross Healthcare interim chief executive Chris White says while they encourage all eligible New Zealanders to become vaccinated, Southern Cross has sophisticated and detailed screening processes in place to keep patients and people working in its hospitals safe.

"Our employees, medical specialists, and contractors are all required to be vaccinated," he says.

"We have ensured the safety of our patients, employees, medical specialists, and contractors throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This has comprised rigorous testing regimens to minimise the risk of transmission of the virus in Alert Levels 3 and 4, in particular testing of patients within 48 hours of admission to our facilities.

"Our planned approach is to continue to risk-assess all patients prior to admission, to minimise the risk of having Covid-19 on admission."

Kudos to Southern Cross on this. They were attacked by Sue Grey on social media and they responded with clarification within 24 hours, and the Sue Grey post was taken down not long after.

However, it didn't stop their call centre from being log jammed for 3 1/2 weeks following the BS that was posted.

What was posted was a similar theme other insurers around the world have been attacked for, which has been completely misconstrued by those posting it. Most are playing the experimental card when medical authorities have given approval.

Policy documents say MedSafe approved, not MedSafe approved without conditions, and it has been this subtle distinction that has been missed by the trouble makers.
