It said Tony Lane brought a wealth of banking and financial services sector experience to Cigna.

He has worked as a chief risk officer (CRO) at China Construction Bank and CRO retail at BNZ, as well as various consulting assignments for financial institutions including Kiwibank.

Chief executive Gail Costa said the role had been created as a result of Cigna and OnePath combining earlier this year.

“We’re excited to have Tony join our leadership team where his strong background in financial services will be used to guide this important area of the business. We now have the perfect opportunity to build upon our existing risk management activities to deliver a programme that meets the needs of our larger organisation.”

Lane said he had a passion for implementing best practice risk and compliance management programmes. He said introducing a robust new risk framework that was easy to use and understand was key to enabling a positive risk culture that protected staff, customers and the business.

“Our goal is to establish a culture where risks can be raised simply and effectively, without hesitation. We’ll be equipping our people with the knowledge and tools to proactively identify where risks lie in our day-to-day operations.

“Looking out for the needs of our customers is at the heart of everything we do at Cigna so there’s an imperative for our teams to be well versed in risk management. This will ensure we continue to meet the needs of our customers as we continue to grow our business and navigate the changing regulatory and economic environment.

“I’m proud to be with Cigna and look forward to driving the implementation of this key programme of work.”
