Delays to pension fix

The Government announced last year that it would put a stop to the spousal provision rule that requires some New Zealanders’ pensions to be offset by the superannuation their partners receive from overseas.

It said that from July 1 the direct deduction of a government-administered overseas pension received by a superannuitant’s partner from that superannuitant’s New Zealand Super or veteran’s pension would be removed.

But that has been delayed by Covid-19.

Minister for Social Development Carmel Sepuloni said the changes would be pushed out to November 9 because of the ministry's Covid-19 workload. It has administered the wage subsidy, as well as the Covid-19 income relief payment.
