[Weekly Wrap] What would Gordon and Shirley think?
[OPINION] It's been a big week with Financial Markets Authority Chief Executive Samantha Barrass exiting the regulator and Partners Life buying Fidelity Life.
With the latter the question I'm pondering is: "What would Gordon and Shirley think?" Would they be rolling in their graves or celebrating?
Gordon and Shirley Watson established Fidelity Life way back in 1973 as a proudly New Zealand-owned life insurer. The moniker has continued till now, with many of Fidelity's press releases starting with the words "Fidelity Life, New Zealand’s largest locally owned life insurer."
There have been rumours swirling for some time that the two major shareholders, NZ Super Fund and Ngāi Tahu Holdings, wanted out of their investment. Likewise, tI have lost count of the number of times Partners Life has been mentioned as the suitor if such a deal came to fruition.
