Southern Cross CEO steps down

After 10 years in the role Southern Cross's Chief Executive is stepping down.

Wednesday, February 11th 2026, 12:03PM

Southern Cross Health Chief Executive Nick Astwick will step down after the society’s annual in September this year.

Astwick has been in the role for a decade and says “It has been an honour to serve our people, customers and members in an organisation that plays such a significant role in New Zealanders’ health and wellbeing. Over the past decade my focus has been to contemporise Southern Cross, modernising the organisation so it is functionally excellent, operationally resilient, and more relevant to more New Zealanders."

“We invested for long-term impact, navigated the Covid years as well as major structural shifts in healthcare demand, and I believe Southern Cross remains a market leader and is well placed to serve our members well into the future.”

He acknowledged the people of Southern Cross first and foremost: “Our people and our member and purpose-driven culture is at the heart of Southern Cross. I’m deeply proud of all our people have achieved. I also want to recognise my leadership team, who will I’m sure continue the momentum we’ve built, and to thank the Chair(s) and Board for their guidance, challenge and support throughout my tenure.”

Astwick intends to pursue a portfolio career, as a growth director and investor, working with organisations that are looking to transform, stay relevant, and grow through a rapidly changing environment.

Chairman Chris Black said, "Under Nick’s leadership, Southern Cross Health Society has grown its total membership and substantially modernised the organisation, all while continuing to deliver exceptional service in the moments that matter most to members."

“Most recently, Nick’s successfully navigated the Society through the challenging financial headwinds experienced across the entire health insurance sector as well as led the development of a strategic blueprint for the organisation through to its 75th anniversary in 2036.

“Nick can rightly be proud of his achievements as CEO at a time of immense external change and increasing regulation. Throughout, Nick’s steadfast belief in Southern Cross Health Society and the vital role it plays in the broader New Zealand health ecosystem on behalf of its 950,000 members has provided a true north‑point for others to follow.

The board will "undertake a comprehensive search for a suitable successor.”
