The importance of health insurance tools

nib clinical adviser and health coach Rebekka Costello receives top award
Monday 24th of August 2026

nib is encouraging advisers to make clients more aware of the preventative health and wellbeing tools available through their health insurance, rather than viewing cover solely as a way to pay claims.

More than 21,700 nib members used a health and wellbeing tool or health management programme in the 2025 financial year.

nib New Zealand chief executive Skye Daniels says health insurance has a role before members reach the point where they need treatment.

The insurer offers 11 Health Management Programmes covering areas including heart health, women’s wellness, cancer care and prevention, healthier living and joints. The programmes are designed to help eligible members make lifestyle changes and manage their health.

Health coaching is another part of the service. In FY25, nib health coaches worked with 192 members, who could access up to six 45-minute calls. The service is designed to help members navigate care, improve their health knowledge and manage chronic conditions earlier.

nib clinical adviser and health coach Rebekka Costello says coaches can also connect members with clinical and mental health services and private specialists, while providing practical support around areas such as sleep and nutrition.

Daniels says partnerships between insurers, clinicians and health professionals can improve health outcomes and help people make decisions during complex periods.

Costello, a former emergency department registered nurse, was named the Health Coaches Australasia and New Zealand Association Health Equity Award winner for 2025. The award recognised her work in health equity programmes and coaching for underserved communities.
