Wednesday, December 23rd 1998, 12:00AM

by Philip Macalister

The chairman of the SIL Mutual Fund and MFL Mutual Fund, James Maddren, CBE, has died in hospital after a short illness.
Maddren became a founding director of the MFL Mutual Fund in 1969, fulfilling the role of chairman for 26 years. He became chairman of the SIL Mutual Fund in 1993.
The directors of both funds, in a statement, "pay tribute to the enormous contribution made by James Maddren to the growth and development of both funds, through the application of his extraordinary knowledge and experience."

Maddren is well known for the pioneering work he initiated into the exporting and processing of venison and game meats. He also took leading roles in the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, Manufacturers' Federation, J Ballantyne, Ebos Group, Donaghys Industries, Container Terminals and the Shipping Corporation.
He was, in 1997, named a Laureate of the Enterprise New Zealand Business Hall of Fame.
