Flexibility and proven performance the key

Increasingly sophisticated New Zealand investors want proof of consistent good performance as well as flexibility when choosing an investment.

Increasingly sophisticated New Zealand investors want proof of consistent good performance as well as flexibility when choosing an investment.

That’s according to Richard Baker, general manager of risk and investment products with Tower NZ.

"People are demanding much more of their investments these days," says Baker. "They want to see how an investment has performed over a significant period of time, to see that it can stand up to a variety of market environments – and they want to stay in control as much as possible."

Key Benefits at a Glance:

TOWER’s GAM Multi-Trading Fund

  • 16.01% p.a. return on average over 5 years, net of tax and management fees
  • No lock-in or closed-ended restrictions
  • Comparatively low overall investor fees
  • Minimum investment only $1000 or $100 per month over 12 months
  • 5-star independent rating
  • Ranked in Top 5 best performing managed funds in NZ for 2001
  • Managed by Global Asset Management – a leading international hedge fund manager for 15 years

He cites Tower’s GAM Multi-Trading Fund as an excellent example of this. The popularity of the fund has increased alongside greater understanding of the advantages of having hedge funds in an investment portfolio.

"I think most people are more aware than ever of the advantages of hedge funds in an investment portfolio, especially hedge funds that are diversified on an international basis."

Unlike other hedge fund offerings on the market today, the GAM Multi-Trading Fund boasts modest investor fees, an uncommonly low initial investment minimum of only $1000 and no lock-in or closed-ended restrictions. This translates to investors being able to have greater flexibility and retain control over their money without sacrificing the potential for greater returns, says Baker.

The GAM Multi-Trading Fund belongs to a style of hedge fund known as a "fund of funds". These funds invest in a variety of hedge funds with different investment styles, and have an objective of generating enhanced returns with low volatility and low correlation to world sharemarkets. This type of hedge fund is recognised for its ability to put investors in a position where they are protected from extreme volatility, yet can take advantage of any upturns that occur.

This is especially true if the hedge fund manager is one of the world’s best, says Baker. The fund’s manager, Global Asset Management, or GAM, has been managing leading international hedge funds for 15 years. They have won the Alternative Investment Managers Fund of Funds Award for the past three years, and also hold the 2001 Hedge Funds Review Fund of Funds Award.

"If you can get an international manager with an unrelenting history of consistent performance and effective management, then you’re clearly going to be ahead of the pack," says Baker.

"That’s the main reason why the GAM Multi-Trading Fund is doing so well. It’s got award-winning expertise behind it, and the proof is in the consistently good returns." Over the past five years, for example, the fund has achieved a 16.01% return per annum, net of tax and management fees.

The fund also carries an independent 5-star rating, and lately achieved a top 5 placing in a recent top ten list of the best performing managed funds in New Zealand over the last 12 months put out by FundSource. This is in an environment that saw only two out of these top 10 funds with an emphasis on international markets.

"We’re also on the verge of placing the fund within a structure that will enhance the fund’s performance and mean increased returns for New Zealand investors," says Baker.

The new structure will be announced shortly, and investors in the GAM Multi-Trading Fund will be in a prime position to take advantage of it.
