Guv talks tough
Reserve Bank Governor Don Brash has again hit out at New Zealanders for over-investing in property.
He says New Zealanders' "irrational exuberance" for getting into debt in the hope of making money out of non-existent inflation was distorting the economy.
The comments, made at an agricultural conference last week, mirror earlier concerns he has expressed about private borrowing driving up the current account deficit and fuelling property price inflation.
While in the past investment in property was rational because of inflation, the period of such gains "has come to an end now and I fear there may be tears", he says.

KIPT buys up
Kiwi Income Property Trust has exercised its option to acquire the remaining 50 per cent of the Northlands Shopping Centre in Christchurch that it doesn't already own.
Richard Ellis valued the centre, together with an adjacent site, at $67.5 million. KIPT will purchase the shares in the joint venture company based on that valuation.
The estimated net cost is $20.2 million, however the final price won't be determined until the joint venture company's accounts have been audited.
A deposit of $5 million has been paid and the balance will be made up of ordinary KIPT units.

WestpacTrust sets price
WestpacTrust is securitising a package of its New Zealand home loans for Australian investors.
It has priced its first mortgage-backed securities issue of $298 million at 28 basis points over the 90-day bank bill rate for the Class A notes and 50 basis points over the 90-days for the subordinated Class B notes.
The issue was structured in two classes. The senior Class A notes were for a face value of A$243.69 million and have an average life of 3.5 years. The subordinated Class B notes were for A$16.95 million and has an average life of 6.6 years.
