IFA awards members

The Institute of Financial Advisers (IFA) honoured volunteer service to the organisation last night handing out five Fellowship awards.

"As a professional association, we depend upon expert volunteers to function," IFA president Lyn McMorran says . "IFA is therefore delighted to present awards to people who have made an outstanding contribution to our aim of creating and growing a professional association for financial advisers that meets global standards.  All these members have played an important role."

Besides the five Fellowships awards recognising outstanding contribution at the national level five Citation Awards recognising volunteer service at a local or committee level were also awardedd.

Fellowships were awarded to:

  • Ian Clark, Dunedin
  • Garth Clarricoats, New Plymouth
  • George Elkington, Wellington
  • Simon Hassan, Auckland
  • Stephen O'Connor, Invercargill

Ian Clark, whose background is life insurance, was President in 2003-04 and also represented NZ at the Asia Pacific Life Insurance Congress.

Garth Clarricoats, is also a life insurance specialist and a Chartered Life Underwriter who has served in many national roles, including as Vice President in 2006-07.  He represented IFA at the Asia Pacific Financial Services Association from 2004 until 2009.

George Elkington, started in life insurance though he is also a Certified Financial Planner professional.  He was President during 2005-06.

Simon Hassan is a Certified Financial Planner professional but also a Chartered Life Underwriter.  He was President for two years, 2006-08 and served 9 years on the Board.  Simon represented IFA at the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) for 3 years.

Stephen O'Connor is a Certified Financial Planner professional and a Chartered Accountant.  He was President 2004-05.  Stephen is the current Chair of the FPSB, the international organisation that sets global standards for financial planning and the Certified Financial Planner professional designation.  He is the first New Zealander to hold this post.

The Citation Awards were made to:

  • John Doolan, Palmerston North who has been Branch Secretary for 18 years.
  • Trisha Edmonds, Christchurch who has been active at branch level for 10 years.
  • Ross Sheerin, Tauranga who has been very active on branch and national committees for several years.
  • Mary Potter, Auckland who has been Branch Secretary of IFA's largest branch for many years.
  • Barry Stewart, Auckland who has been very active as a volunteer for many years, including as a President of IFA's predecessor financial planning association.
