Fund Source surprises with awards

There were some surprises in the Fund Source Fund Manager of the year awards which where handed out in Auckland last night.

Wednesday, August 30th 2017, 8:42PM

One of the surprises is that a firm which years ago dominated the funds management space in New Zealand, and then disappeared from view after a bank bought it, was named fund manager of the year.

This top gong went to Westpac-owned BT Funds Management. BT also received the sector award for the Australasian property sector.

The Fund Manager of the Year Award is awarded to managers with more than $1 billion of funds under management and is based on a combination of one-year returns as well as other return data over the past three years.

Another of the big surprises is that an ETF, SmartShares Mid Cap Fund, took out the NZ Equities category; ahead of active managers like Harbour Asset Management.

A key change in the awards this year is that Australian managers were eligible, as long as they met a number of criteria including being available on a retail basis and having some sort of distribution arrangement. This includes having an NZ-based representation, third party distribution or some sort of commitment to visit advisers in New Zealand.

Many Australian managers featured as finalists including Allan Grey, Bennelong Asset Management, Bentham Asset Management, Fiducian Funds Management, Macquarie and Premium.

This year a number of the sharebroker-owned fund management businesses featured as either finalists or winners, including Craigs IP-owned Quay Street Asset Management and Forsyth Barr.

Chief FundSource awards judge and Research IP director Darren Howlin said "the competition was very tight this year, with several new funds coming through, and the inclusion of Australian fund managers for the first time.”

The awards show that New Zealand’s funds management industry is "healthy and robust, and looking better than ever to meet the needs of investors.”
