Perpetual Guardian appoints head of Investment Advice

Former Head of Private Wealth at Trustees Executors takes up new role at Perpetual Guardian.

Wednesday, August 15th 2018, 9:47AM

Perpetual Guardian, has appointed John Winch to the role of Head of Investment Advisory. Simultaneously Winch, who has held a variety of governance and senior management roles in New Zealand and his native Britain, assumes the chairmanship of the Perpetual Guardian Investment Committee.

In both roles, he is responsible for guiding the investment arm of the business through a number of internal strategic changes against the backdrop of changes to the New Zealand regulatory framework, which is expected to be altered by the enactment of the Financial Services Legislation Amendments Bill (FSLAB) and – potentially – by outcomes from the financial services-related Royal Commission in Australia.

Winch, an authorised financial adviser, most recently led the private wealth team at Trustees Executors, and held a specialist advisory role to high net worth retail clients of Gareth Morgan Investments, a position to which he was seconded from Kiwibank. He has owned multiple professional services businesses in the United Kingdom, from start-ups to established companies; served as equity partner at a firm of chartered accountants; held the CEO position and chaired the investment committee of a boutique investment management business; and held directorships in a business consulting group and property holdings firm. He has also served as a compliance and anti-money laundering officer.

His interest in Perpetual Guardian is driven by his focus on people, Winch says. “I am deeply passionate about delivering the right outcomes for clients. There is always the right way to do things, and the fiduciary world has a natural synergy for me. There are four key principles I hold very dear to my heart – authenticity, accountability, consistency and collaboration – and Perpetual Guardian has these in spades, along with a highly engaged and attuned workforce. I am very happy to head up the investment advisory arm of the business.”

Perpetual Guardian’s General Manager of Personal Client Services, John McFetridge, says, “John’s appointment really steps up our commitment to our clients in a highly regulated environment, and his wealth of knowledge, his experience and his uncompromising passion for great client outcomes is unparalleled. We are delighted to have the opportunity to have John join our incredibly committed team. The New Zealand regulatory environment as it pertains to investment management and reporting is as complex and sophisticated as it’s ever been, and under John’s leadership, our clients will continue to receive the very best investment advice, solutions and outcomes.”
