New idea for high-rise site
The Christchurch City Council will consider a call by Estuary area residents to buy the controversial Ferrymead Tavern site for which a multi-storey building was proposed.

Residents were outraged last year after planning permission was granted for a 14-storey building on the waterfront land.An alternate proposal for a seven-storey development was also heartily condemned, and in May this year the project's developer said other factors had led him to pull out of the project.
Yesterday's council meeting received a deputation from the Mount Pleasant Community Centre and Ratepayers' Association and the Avon Heathcote Ihutai Estuary Trust.
Trust spokesman Alex Drysdale urged councillors to take action to stop future large-scale development on land surrounding the Estuary, and on the tavern site in particular.
"We strongly believe it is the council's responsibility to step in and investigate the purchase of this site," Drysdale said.
