The best in ethical investing to be awarded

Mindful Money is introducing the annual Ethical Investment Awards which highlights the growth in responsible investing.

Monday, April 12th 2021, 6:56AM 6 Comments

The Mindful Money Ethical Investment Awards celebrate the role that ethical and impact investing are playing in making money a force for good, founder Barry Coates says.

"They reflect the growing movement to re-orient investment finance towards sustainability and well-being, providing solutions to the mounting crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and inequality."

This is an opportunity to celebrate the finalists and winners, engage in discussions about the role of investment in climate action and to get together with leaders in the ethical/responsible/impact investment community.

Coates says the awards honour the funds and the individuals who are leading the movement to make responsible investing the new normal, and impact investing the progressive frontier.

The 2021 Mindful Money Award Categories Are:

Best Ethical KiwiSaver Fund Provider
This award will go to the KiwiSaver fund provider that demonstrates the most effective responsible or ethical investment practices.

Looking forward to seeing whether these categories / winners include those investment capabilities that are available to NZ investors, or whether awards are limited to sponsors of Mindful Money.

Pragmatic- surely that will depend on whether organizations enter?

What does anyone think is most important to your clients?
Say investing in an "ethical" way produces an annual return of 7%.
Say investing in a way to produce maximum returns produces an annual return of 22%.
Which do you think most of your clients will pick?

@LNF - many younger clients and women care more about having ethical investments than ruining the environment and people’s lives at the cost of an extra dollars return. Having said that there are a number of highly ethical investments that also have very good returns.

@LNF - I do think that ESG investing is growing in importance with consumers, with the delta between 'ethical' & 'non ethical' investments not always as dramatic as your example (the caveat being the difference between 'bad investments that masquerade as ethical' and robust investing which will often deliver the return difference).

@globug - I'm unsure of the 'entry process'. Surely the Awards are reliant upon the 'best ethical solution per category' as opposed to the Manager's applying to enter the competition. Doesn't the latter approach dilute the relevance of the award?

What will be fascinating with these awards will be:
Who are the expert panel of judges?
What are the their criteria for selecting / awarding winners?
What is the correlation between award recipients and gold ($25,000), silver ($10,000) and general ($5,000) sponsors...
