Whineray and White join sustainable finance board

Outgoing NZ Super CEO Matt Whineray has joined the board of Toitū Tahua: Centre for Sustainable Finance.

Whineray, who has led the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation for 15 years, announced in May that he will leave the $60 billion super fund at the end of the year.

The Centre for Sustainable Finance (CSF) has announced Whineray will join its board along with Chris White, Treasury director of projects in the financial and commercial group.

Whineray is a former co-chair of the Sustainable Finance Forum. White, led the establishment of New Zealand’s Sovereign Green Bonds programme in 2022.

Whineray says he has had a particular interest in sustainable finance for some time and he will use his Guardians experience to help CSF achieve its goal of accelerating progress towards a sustainable and equitable financial system.

White says sustainable finance is a “crucial enabler of the transition of our economy to a low-emissions future. It makes sense to draw on the public and private sectors to ensure our efforts are targeted, coordinated and leveraging the talents of the many different participants that shape our financial system.”

CSF chair Bridget Coates said both have led crucial pieces of the country’s sustainable finance architecture.
