Pretty benign economic news

The pre-election economic update from Treasury yesterday had no big surprises and appears to have done little to change any forecasts around future interest rate moves. Perhaps the more important release was the Reserve Bank's survey of inflation expectations. As usual, the big focus was on respondents’ views on annual CPI inflation. For the year ahead these eased from 2.08% to to 1.96%, while the forecast for two years ahead was moderated from 2.36% to 2.23%. This put the one-year view close to the mid-point of the RBNZ’s 1.0 to 3.0% target range, while the two-year view was still riding a bit above this.

The only home loan rate changes today are little ones to Housing New Zealand's offers.

Home loan deals still speeding

Forget autumn: ANZ, for one, still thinks it's hot and has extended its "Summer Breeze" home loan deal until the end of April.

Forget autumn: ANZ, for one, still thinks it's hot and has extended its "Summer Breeze" home loan deal until the end of April.

It's the second extension for the bank's promotion, which offers home loan assessments in 45 minutes. Summer Breeze was launched in mid February and, while originally due to wind up in mid March, was then extended to March 30. In announcing the latest extension, ANZ says that the promotion has proved to be "a huge success in terms of delighting customers with a very quick turnaround of their applications".

Borrowers who had home loans approved before March 30 were given a $25 CD voucher, but this part of the offer is not being extended.

Meanwhile, ASB Bank's Summer Home Loan Challenge is still on a roll. This promotion kicked off in mid January and offers home loan approvals within 60 minutes, provided borrowers supply all information needed at the time of applying.
