Harbour scores trifecta

Harbour Asset Management has only been in business for four years, but it scored the trifecta at the Morningstar Fund Manager of the Year Awards.

Wednesday, February 26th 2014, 7:20PM

The Wellington-based firm was crowned fund manager of the year at the awards and also won the fixed interest and domestic equities categories.

The other sector award, for international equities went to ANZ Investments, while Milford Asset Management made it consecutive wins for the KiwiSaver manager of the year.

Morningstar ,, Chris Douglas said "Harbour is a true funds management success story."

He said the firm was head and shoulders above its competitors in the domestic equities sector, and the fund had remained fully invested over hte year as well as investing into the Austraian market.

Douglas also complimented Harbour, and its nanaging director Andrew Bascand, on its team which is "focused on delivering both strong performance results and genuine investor engagement."

"The firm’s well-conceived, timely communication with investors and advisers provides astute insights into both portfolio positioning and market developments. The firm is also resolutely focused on delivering where it counts, and 2013 was another banner year, as the equities and fixed income teams produced first-rate performances."

He says Harbour’s commitment to reinvesting in its staff and business and unwavering commitment to investor outcomes makes the firm a worthy winner.

Its fixed interest team, which has only been together three years, is the firm’s quiet achiever.

"Morningstar analysts have high expectations for their future achievements, and believe that Harbour possesses all the ingredients needed to succeed."

ANZ Investments again won the international equities sector. Douglas says it was a hard sector and only two firms were nominated for the award in tough market conditions. However he described ANZ Investments as having an "outstanding strategy.

"(It) continues to show that in the New Zealand market, few can match its global equities capability. The combination of underlying investment managers Franklin Global Growth, LSV, and MFS remains a winning one for Kiwi investors looking to broaden their portfolios to incorporate the wealth of global investing opportunities."
