Albany centre awaits its fate
Mall giant Westfield New Zealand is opposing a North Shore City Council plan which will enable retail and mixed use development to the north of its proposed mega mall in Albany.

Three North Shore city councillors and one independent hearing commissioner have been meeting over the past month to hear submissions on the plan changes that will shape the future of the Albany centre.The majority of the submissions on the centre have related to what activities are allowed in the various zones.
In the council's initial plan for the area in 1994, it was proposed that the Albany centre was to have a "retail core" surrounded by a "frame" comprising a mix of lower density, large format, car-based retail and office development.
But in 1999 the council adopted its growth management strategy which said the centre needed to take on more of a mixed use layout if it was to "fulfil its role as a hub for business and residential intensification".
