Young investor’s secret to success

Almost every day we hear young Kiwis are struggling to get onto the property ladder – especially in Auckland where median house prices are 9.5 times the average income.

But Tamzin Letele, who is profiled in this month’s NZ Property Investor magazine, is proof that, with grit and determination, it can be done.

At the age of 29, Tamzin is financially savvy with a substantial history of property investment.

She has scrimped and saved, dabbled in trading and property finding, and spent long hours on hard physical grind.

Her journey reads like a painstaking step-by-step of how to achieve the dream.

There have been setbacks, but now – with a mortgage-free bach and a rental portfolio with six income streams - she finally feels like she has arrived.

Sceptics might scoff that she’s had it easy.

To the contrary, she came from a ‘blue collar’ background. Her parents separated; living with her mum, she was always aware meeting expenses was a struggle.

She grew up determined not to continue the cycle.

When she left school after completing seventh form at 16, the would-be investor was inspired by Robert Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad, Poor Dad. She had a vision of becoming a billionaire by the time she was 30.

“Why not?” she asks. “At that age, a typical gen-Y, it was always about the money. And property seemed like the fastest and surest way to wealth.”

Tamzin set herself a goal to make it happen. She was clear about what she wanted to achieve and began early, creating opportunities that would lead to success.
