All of Generate funds meet Mindful Money’s responsible investment standards, giving members confidence that their savings are managed responsibly, transparently and with long-term sustainability in mind.
Mindful Money accredits funds that: Avoid investments that cause significant harm, demonstrate strong stewardship and support more sustainable long-term investment practices.
“Mindful Money is committed to empowering individuals to invest in ways that align with their values and contribute to vital climate, social and environmental initiatives,” Mindful Money chief executive and founder Barry Coates says.
Generate says its members benefit from a dual focus: responsible investing and strong long-term performance. "Our funds have a proven track record of delivering competitive returns across market cycles while maintaining high responsible-investment standards."
"By combining rigorous active management with a mindful investment approach, Generate ensures members’ savings are invested in a way that avoids harm, supports sustainable companies and reflects Kiwi values – without compromising performance."
Generate considers a wide range of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors to help manage risk and deliver competitive long-term returns for members.
Its exclusions policy excludes companies involved in:
- the processing of whale meat
- the manufacturing of cluster munitions, anti-personnel mines and nuclear explosive devices
- tobacco production
"We also apply screening processes to limit exposure to other areas of concern and regularly refine our criteria in line with evolving global standards."
Generate are also supporters of impact investing; investments that deliver positive, measurable outcomes for New Zealand communities and the environment.
Generate partnered with Community Finance and Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust (ŌCHT), committing $14 million to finance 35 new community homes in Christchurch. It is also a major shareholder in Skyline Healthcare Group (SHG), New Zealand’s market leader in aeromedical transport, providing essential scheduled and emergency patient transfers nationwide.
Generate’s Focused Growth, Growth and Moderate Funds have carried the Mindful Fund badge since April 2022. In 2023, the Balanced, Conservative and Defensive Funds were also accredited.
With the addition of six newly launched funds in 2025, every Generate KiwiSaver and Managed Fund is now independently accredited as a Mindful Fund – a significant milestone for our members and our long-term commitment to responsible investing.
