Genesis Emerging Markets Fund

ESG uncovered

7 June 2021

Genesis Emerging Markets Fund (GSS) continues to benefit from diversification across a range of sectors and countries. It has performed competitively in the ongoing recovery and is well positioned to take advantage of a further broad-based recovery in emerging markets (EMs). Genesis has a real impact on investee companies, by actively engaging with them. At Genesis, the asset management group, portfolio managers (PMs) engage with companies directly, thus allowing constructive dialogue with them. The company considers this to be one of the key differentiators for the fund. As an active investor, Genesis regards proxy voting as one of the key stewardship tools to support, influence and challenge portfolio companies’ decisions. ESG considerations directly affect portfolio outcomes as they are a key determinant of the sizing of individual investments in the portfolio. MORE »

EM – high potential amid new investment themes

30 November 2020

Genesis Emerging Markets Fund (GSS) remains broadly diversified across a range of sectors and countries and is well positioned to take advantage of a further broad-based recovery in emerging markets (EM). In addition, the management team is always on the hunt for refreshing investment themes. EM equities are climbing rapidly back to pre-COVID-19 heights, to the level seen in the 11-year equity bull market, before it corrected sharply in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Stock markets have a history of survival and full recovery from major systemic shocks, and the long-term outlook for EM remains positive. MORE »

Depressed sentiment belies bright outlook

1 April 2020

Launched in 1989, Genesis Emerging Markets Fund (GSS) is one of the first UK-listed funds focused on investing in equities in emerging and developing countries. Its primary objective is to deliver long-term capital growth through a bottom-up approach to investing in high-quality companies with sustainable earnings growth. GSS has a solid performance track record, and has outperformed its benchmark over one, three, five and 10 years to end-February. Emerging markets equities have suffered a significant setback in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fund’s discount to NAV is wider than average, which may present an opportunity for long-term investors. Exciting long-term opportunities

16 October 2019

Genesis Emerging Markets Fund (GSS) was launched in 1989 and is one of the first funds listed in the UK focused on this asset class. Its objective is to deliver capital growth over the long term through investing in high-quality companies listed in, or with substantial exposure to, emerging markets. Unconstrained by index considerations, the portfolio reflects the highest-conviction investment ideas from a team of emerging markets specialists. The fund has a solid long-term track record of outperforming the MSCI Emerging Markets Index and, over the past 10 years, has delivered an annualised NAV total return of 8%. Investor appetite for the asset class is currently subdued; however, the manager has a long-term investment horizon and is finding exciting opportunities. MORE »

Long-established emerging markets expertise

9 May 2019

Unconstrained by benchmark considerations, the diversified portfolio is meaningfully differentiated from the index and consists of the manager’s highest-conviction stocks. MORE »

Emerging markets specialist, unloved asset class

30 October 2018

Genesis Emerging Markets Fund (GSS) was launched in July 1989, making it one of the first emerging markets funds to be listed in the UK. It seeks to generate long-term capital growth, primarily through investing in emerging and frontier markets equities. With few constraints relative to the benchmark MSCI Emerging Markets index, the investment approach is bottom-up and focused on high-quality companies that trade on reasonable valuations. The manager believes income convergence with developed economies, and a rapidly growing middle-class, creates compelling long-term opportunities for the asset class. In the nearer term, the manager is finding attractive entry points for investments following a c 20% correction of the benchmark index since January 2018. The board has recently increased its efforts to promote GSS, including a resumption of distributions, while a tender offer was successfully completed in August 2018. The fund’s 13.5% discount to cum-income NAV is at the lower end of the peer group range, suggesting there is scope to narrow over time. MORE »
