nib New Zealand has welcomed the Government’s newly announced five-year Parent Boost Visa, set to open for applications from 29 September 2025.

The visa will allow eligible parents of New Zealand citizens or residents to live in the country for up to ten years, provided they meet health and insurance requirements. CEO Rob Hennin says nib New Zealand supports the policy’s balance between strengthening family ties and safeguarding public resources.

“Family connection is vital to overall wellbeing,” Hennin said. “This new visa offers families the opportunity to reconnect, living in the same country. By ensuring visa holders have private health cover in place, the policy also offers some support for New Zealand’s public health system, and reduces the risk of unexpected costs for families.”

Hennin said health insurance helps ensure people can access care when they need it, whether it’s urgent treatment or support navigating the system.

nib NZ, through its specialist international visitor brand OrbitProtect, offers health insurance to almost 40,000 international students and workers in New Zealand each year. It plans to offer health cover options to those travelling to Aotearoa under the new visa.
